$100,000 Pelican Stakes Draws Field of Eleven Sprinters
On Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs, a field of eleven sprinters will compete in the 31st edition of the $100,000 Pelican Stakes. The six-furlong contest will be run over the main track.
Headlining the field at morning line odds of 3-1 is Risk Factor for trainer Rohan Crichton. A five-year-old son of Stormy Atlantic, he will be making his first start of the year and concluded his 2014 season with three wins from ten starts. He is going for the first stakes win of his career and was third, beaten only a head, in his only other start at Tampa as a three-year-old in the Sophomore Stakes. Paco Lopez will be aboard from post position seven.
Songa trying to earn first stakes victory
Songa, second choice at 9-2 on the morning line, is trying to earn his third consecutive victory for trainer Jorge Navarro. A five-year-old gelded son of Songandaprayer, he has won five of his thirteen starts and is making only his second try against stakes competition after winning a pair of optional claiming races. He has had a bullet workout since his last victory and will have regular rider Jonathan Gonzalez aboard from post position eight.
Good Lord trying to return to winning form
Also in the field at morning line odds of 10-1 is the veteran gelding, Good Lord. A multiple stakes winner trained by Forrest Kaelin, he has won fourteen races over the course of his career and hit the board against graded stakes company. He won four of his ten starts last year and has been on the shelf since a last-place finish in an optional claiming race in November at Churchill Downs. Fernando De La Cruz will be aboard from post six.
