American Pharoah Back in Action in $750,000 Rebel Stakes
On Saturday at Oaklawn Park, the featured race is the 55th running of the $750,000 Rebel Stakes. Scheduled to be run at a mile and a sixteenth on the main track, the Grade 2 race has drawn a field of seven three-year-olds trying to earn points towards a start in the Kentucky Derby (G1).
American Pharoah, the Eclipse award winner as a juvenile, will be making his much-anticipated sophomore debut and has been tabbed at morning line odds of 1-2 for trainer Bob Baffert. Bred and owned by Zayat Stables, the bay son of Pioneerof the Nile is a perfect three-for-three and won a pair of Grade 1 races as a juvenile in California. He has been training sharply for his first start of the year and will break from post position four under Victor Espinoza.
The Truth or Else looking for first stakes win
Second choice at 4-1 on the morning line is The Truth or Else for trainer Ken McPeek. Purchased for $110,000 as a juvenile, the chestnut son of Yes It’s True broke his maiden in his fourth career start as a two-year-old. He has been on the board in three of his four starts against stakes company and was last seen finishing second in the Southwest Stakes (G3). Calvin Borel will be aboard and they are scheduled to break from the rail.
Class test for Madefromlucky in stakes debut
Also in the field at morning line odds of 6-1 is Madefromlucky for trainer Todd Pletcher. Purchased for $150,000 as a juvenile, the chestnut son of Lookin at Lucky will be making his stakes debut after back to back victories. He was last seen winning an optional claiming race as the heavy favorite on the front end at Gulfstream Park. John Velazquez will be back in the irons and they are scheduled to break from post position two.
