Bourbon Pride Captures Colorado Derby
The 2013 Colorado Derby was expected to be a speed duel up front that could set things up nicely for a closer. And that’s exactly what happened, as Bourbon Pride was able to come from ninth-place in the 10-horse field and rally four wide to pass the tiring pace-setters and earn a convincing seven-length win in the $40,000 1 1/16 miles event for three-year-olds on the dirt at Arapahoe Park on Saturday. For the Kentucky-bred son of Lion Heart, it was his second win in 10 lifetime starts.
Bourbon Pride wins going away
Coming out of the gate, the early fractions were set by Afinewineatnine, who was hard-pressed by two others, Dr. Watson and the beating favorite, Sonof a Monstercat. Those three fought it out to the 3/4 pole, where Bourbon Pride was just getting into his best stride. With Michael Iammarino in the irons, the 4-1 Bourbon Pride gained the lead at the top of the stretch and then drew off. Listen You Fool, at 16-1, wasn’t able to go with Bourbon Pride, but did have enough for second-place money, while Dr. Watson stuck around to get third.
Fast But Furious, Lookinggoodinatux renew rivalry
Saturday's feature at Arapahoe was the $35,000 CBTA Futurity Stakes for two-year-olds, going six furlongs on the dirt. Going off as the 6/5 chalk with jockey Don Frazier, the Justin Gleason trained Fast But Furious made it two-for-two in his young career, gutting out a neck victory over a more-than-game Lookingoodinatux. After opening up by two lengths, Fast But Furious had to hold off Lookingoodinatux at the end, as that one just ran out of track. It’s the second time the two have met this season, and the second 1-2 finish with Fast But Furious on top.
