Quarter Horse Action Leads to Big Payoff
Quarter horse racing was in the spotlight this past weekend at Arapahoe Park, and a longshot winner in the feature Pen Pal Stakes on Sunday provided lots of excitement for fans of the short sprints, and a healthy payoff for bettors at the windows. Sent off at 17-1, Pauls Gray Dream, under jockey Jaciel Soto, poked his nose in front coming from the gate and battled to a head win over Essohess, with Furious Styles a neck back in third. Even-money favorite This Is Da One could do no better than seventh over the fast track.
Result triggers a $1,000 trifecta
With the double-digit starting odds, Pauls Gray Dream returned his backers $35.80 for the win, $9.00 for the place and $7.80 for the show. Combined with Essohess (4-1) a 4/9 $2 quinella returned $70.00 while a $2 exacta paid $276.20. With the 11-1 Furious Styles added to the bottom of a ticket, the payoff for a $2 4/9/3 trifecta came to $1,062.40. When Chopperette, at 4-1 odds, claimed the ninth race, the payoff for the 4/11 late Daily Double paid out $462.00.
Late races return big prices at Arapahoe
It was the second day in a row that the late races at Arapahoe rewarded bettors with big-price payoffs. In Saturday’s ninth race, 11-1 Brahms Inferno scored over Regal Journey and Gordo at War in a one-mile claiming race. In addition to returning $24.60 for the win, the 10/5 exacta paid $260.80, the quinella paid $100.00 and the 10/5/2 tri paid $1,710.60 on a $2 ticket. Racing action – and the chance to cash in on more big winners – resumes Friday at Arapahoe. Those unable to attend on person are invited to wager at one of Colorado’s OTBs.
