Stopchargingmaria Takes on Older Rivals in $400,000 Beldame
On Saturday at Belmont Park, some of the top fillies and mares on the East Coast will compete in the 76th edition of the $400,000 Beldame Invitational. The Grade 1 race will be contested at a mile and an eighth on the main track and has attracted a field of seven.
Stopchargingmaria has been installed as the 5-2 morning line favorite for trainer Todd Pletcher. The three-year-old daughter of Tale of the Cat, a $220,000 purchase as a juvenile, has won her last three starts against graded stakes competition and will be taking on older rivals for the first time. John Velazquez, aboard last time out for her victory in the Alabama (G1), will be back in the irons for Mike Repole and they will break from post three.
Stanwyck going for first win of the year
Second choice at morning line odds of 3-1 is Stanwyck. Trained by John Shirreffs, the five-year-old daughter of Empire Maker is a homebred for owners Jerry and Ann Moss. She has gone winless from six starts this year and her last win came last October at Belmont Park. Rajiv Maragh, aboard for her third place finish in the Personal Ensign (G1) last time out, has retained the mount and will break from post four.
Toasting back in form after Sky Beauty win
Also in the field at odds of 8-1 is Toasting for trainer Tom Albertrani and owner West Point Thoroughbreds. A five time winner, the four-year-old daughter of Congrats made a winning return to Belmont Park last time out in the Sky Beauty Stakes. Three of her five wins have come at Belmont and she will have Javier Castellano aboard from post position two. She is trying for her third win of the year and her first Grade 1.
